An Introduction to Crystals
A plain, grounded starting point for anyone holding their first stone, or their fifth.
Crystals are naturally formed minerals that people across almost every culture have carried, worn and placed for meaning. This guide covers why you might be drawn to a particular crystal and how to live with one day to day. Every stone from Symbolia comes with a meaning card, so wherever you start, you'll always have the story to hand.
Why Are You Drawn to a Particular Crystal?
You're drawn to a crystal because something about it, colour, weight, the way light moves through it, a meaning half remembered, caught your attention and held it. That attention is a reliable guide.
Most people's first crystal isn't chosen so much as noticed. It's the one on the shelf that keeps pulling the eye back. It's a gift from someone who said "this reminded me of you" without being able to say why.
We'd say the stone you're drawn to is usually the right one, not because of anything magical in the choosing, but because attention is its own kind of information. What it means is yours to decide. That it caught you at all is the interesting part.
If you're drawn to a sign rather than a stone, a robin, a rainbow, a white butterfly, Search by Symbol will take you from the sign to the stones connected with it.
What Is a Crystal?
A crystal is a mineral whose atoms are arranged in a repeating, orderly pattern, and it's why crystals form the shapes they do. It's also a piece of geology that people have carried and worn for meaning for thousands of years. Neither cancels the other out.
For the geology in full, see our Science of Crystals guide. For the history and belief behind the meanings, see Where Crystal Meanings Come From.
How Do You Use Crystals Day to Day?
Crystals are used by carrying them, wearing them, placing them somewhere visible, holding them, or keeping one close during meditation. There is no single right way.
Carrying. In a pocket or bag, so the stone is there when you reach for it.
Wearing. Jewellery is the oldest way of keeping a stone close, and the reason most of our range exists. A stone worn at the throat, the wrist or the ear is a small, private reminder of whatever it was chosen for.
Placing. On a desk, a bedside, a windowsill. Where you'll see it, and where it will quietly do its work, or remind you to do yours.
Holding. Simply sitting with a stone in the hand, for a minute or ten.
Meditation. Holding or placing a stone during quiet time, using it as a focus point.
What Crystals Are, and What They Aren't
Crystals carry meaning because people have given it to them, across thousands of years and hundreds of cultures, and that meaning is real in the way any long-held tradition is real. They are not a substitute for medical care, or for talking to someone when something is genuinely wrong.
We say "said to" throughout our Journal content on purpose. A stone can be a reminder, a focus, a comfort, a small beautiful object that holds a promise you made to yourself. That's a lot. It doesn't need to be more.
Where Should a Beginner Start?
Start with the crystal that keeps catching your eye. Read its card. Put it somewhere you'll see it, or carry it for a week. Notice whether you reach for it. That's the whole practice.
If you're not sure which stone that might be, Find Your Stone and Ask Symbolia are both built for exactly that question.
When you want to know what your stone is said to mean, our guide to crystal meanings and properties has them stone by stone.
