Crystal Shapes Explained: Tumble Stones to Clusters

Crystal Shapes Explained

The shape changes how a stone is used. It doesn't make one better than another.

Crystals come as tumble stones, palm stones, points and towers, double-terminated points, raw stones, freeforms and clusters. Each shape suits a different way of living with a stone. This guide covers what each one is and what it's typically used for.

Tumble Stones

Small, polished, rounded. The most versatile shape there is: they fit in a pocket, a bag, or a closed hand without a second thought. A good place to start if you're new to any of this.

Palm Stones

Larger and flatter than a tumble stone, shaped specifically to sit in the palm. Made to be held rather than placed on a shelf, something to reach for in the moments that actually ask something of you.

Points and Towers

A crystal cut or grown to a single point. The point is said to direct energy in the direction it faces, which is why towers are often placed somewhere deliberate: a desk, a windowsill, a bedside table.

Double-Terminated Points

Pointed at both ends rather than one. Said to move energy in both directions at once, which makes a double-terminated point a natural choice for balance, or for the centre point of a crystal grid.

Raw and Rough Stones

Unpolished, exactly as the earth made them. Some people prefer them precisely because nothing has been done to them since they came out of the ground.

Freeforms

Hand-shaped, but not into any set form. No two the same. Chosen for character and individuality rather than for any specific function.

Clusters

Many crystal points growing from one shared base. Clusters are often used to cleanse other stones placed nearby, since the many points are said to spread that effect outward, or simply kept as a piece meant to hold the energy of a whole room rather than being carried or worn.

A tumble stone kept in a pocket is doing exactly as much as a tower on a desk. The shape is really a question about how you want to live with a stone day to day, carried, placed, held, worn as jewellery, rather than a ranking of which is most effective.

Jewellery

Crystal Shapes, Answered

What is the difference between a crystal point, a tower and a wand?

A point or tower has a single tip and is usually placed upright. A double-terminated point has a tip at both ends. A wand is longer and smoother, usually held.

What is a crystal cluster?

Many points growing from one base, often used to cleanse other stones or hold the energy of a room.

What are palm stones used for?

Shaped to sit in the hand, made to be held rather than placed, a natural fit for meditation.

Which crystal shape should a beginner choose?

Tumble stones are the most versatile starting point, though no shape is inherently better than another.

Symbolia
