What Is the Third Eye? Chakras, Awakening and the Sixth Sense

The seat of intuition and inner vision, a centre of perception beyond the ordinary senses.

The third eye is an energy centre located between the eyebrows, widely understood across spiritual traditions as the seat of intuition, inner vision and a kind of knowing that goes beyond ordinary perception. When people describe it as open or awakened, what is usually meant is that this capacity for deeper seeing has become more active.

A Kind of Knowing

Have you ever had a moment of knowing something before you could explain how you knew it? A sense of what was about to happen, or a feeling about a person or a place that turned out to be right. Most of us have had this at least once. Most of us filed it away without looking at it too closely.

In many traditions, that capacity, the part of us that perceives beyond the five senses, has a name and a location. It sits between the eyebrows, slightly above the bridge of the nose. It is called the third eye.

The third eye is not a physical structure. It is understood as an energy centre, a point of perception through which we access intuition, inner vision and a kind of knowing that doesn't come from the rational mind. In Hindu and yogic tradition it corresponds to the sixth chakra, called Ajna, which translates roughly as "to perceive" or "to command."

Understanding the Chakras

To understand the third eye, it helps to understand chakras. The word chakra comes from Sanskrit and means wheel or circle. In yogic tradition, chakras are centres of energy located along the central channel of the body, from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. There are seven main ones, each associated with different aspects of physical, emotional and spiritual experience.

1st
Root
2nd
Sacral
3rd
Solar Plexus
4th
Heart
5th
Throat
6th
Third Eye
7th
Crown

The first chakra sits at the base of the spine and is associated with safety, groundedness and survival. The second sits just below the navel and governs creativity and emotion. The third, at the solar plexus, is connected to personal power and will. The fourth is the heart, love, connection, compassion. The fifth is the throat, expression, truth, communication. The sixth is the third eye. The seventh, at the crown of the head, is associated with pure consciousness and connection to something beyond the individual self.

Each chakra is understood to have its own colour, frequency and quality of energy, the same way each wavelength of light carries something distinct. The third eye's colour is indigo, deep and still, the colour of the sky just before full dark.

What It Means to Be "Open" or "Awakened"

When the third eye is described as open or awakened, what is usually meant is that this centre of perception has become more active. Intuition sharpens. Patterns become more visible. There is a greater sensitivity to what is happening beneath the surface of things, in a situation, in a relationship, in oneself. It is less about seeing visions and more about seeing clearly.

Kundalini and Awakening

This connects to something larger that many traditions describe as awakening, and in the yogic tradition specifically, to what is called kundalini. Kundalini is understood as a form of primal energy that lies dormant at the base of the spine, coiled like a serpent. When it begins to move, through sustained practice, through meditation, through certain life experiences, it rises through the chakras one by one, activating and clearing each centre as it goes. When it reaches the third eye, perception shifts. When it reaches the crown, something more fundamental changes: the sense of separation between self and everything else begins to dissolve.

Kundalini awakening is described differently by everyone who experiences it. For some it is gradual, almost imperceptible, a slow brightening. For others it arrives suddenly, a surge of energy, intense emotion, physical sensation, a world that looks different than it did the day before. It is not always comfortable and it is not always chosen. But across traditions and across centuries, the experience of it has been described in remarkably similar terms.

What is striking about all of this is how old it is. The third eye, the chakras, the idea of energy moving through the body and perception opening as it does, none of this is new age. These ideas have been part of human understanding for thousands of years, surfacing in different languages, in different places, carrying the same essential shape. Something in us has always known that ordinary perception is only part of the story. That there is more available than what the eyes report on any given day.

Stones Associated With the Third Eye

Certain stones are traditionally associated with the third eye chakra, said to support intuition, clarity and deeper perception. Amethyst and iolite are among the most commonly connected, both carrying the indigo energy of the sixth chakra, often used in meditation or worn as a way of staying connected to this quality of awareness.

What are chakras?

Chakras are energy centres located along the central channel of the body, from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. The word comes from Sanskrit and means wheel or circle. The third eye chakra is associated with the colour indigo, a deep, still blue-violet, the colour of the sky just before full dark.

What is a kundalini awakening?

Kundalini is understood as a form of primal energy that lies dormant at the base of the spine. When it begins to rise, through meditation, spiritual practice or certain life experiences, it moves through the chakras one by one. A kundalini awakening refers to this energy reaching and activating the higher chakras, often accompanied by intense physical, emotional or perceptual experiences.

How do you know if your third eye is opening?

People who describe the third eye opening often report sharpening intuition, an increased sensitivity to the energy of people and places, a greater awareness of patterns and synchronicities, and a sense of perceiving beyond what the rational mind alone can access. It is less about visual phenomena and more about a deepening quality of awareness.

What does the third eye have to do with crystals?

Certain stones are traditionally associated with the third eye chakra and are said to support intuition, clarity and deeper perception. Amethyst and iolite are among the most commonly connected, both carry the indigo energy of the sixth chakra and are often used in meditation or worn as a way of staying connected to this quality of awareness.

Is the third eye real?

The third eye is not a physical structure in the body. Whether it is real depends on what framework you're using. As an anatomical fact, no. As a description of a quality of human experience, the capacity for intuition, pattern recognition and perception beyond the literal, it describes something most people have felt at least once, even if they've never called it that.
